Long Block deal, what you think?
I found a LT1 longblock deal for $500. It's got aluminum heads but no intake, so forth. Owner claims it s from a Firehawk and has 2500 miles. I was thiking of picking this up and going through it, maybe doing a bearing job is the bores are good still.
Thoughts? Is this worth it?
Also, I noticed that different versions of the aluminum headed LT1 had different horsepower ratings (exclusive of the LT1/LT4 diffs) and wondered why?
thanks.

Where's it located, I'll get it for that price and mileage. I have been on the hunt for a stock short block. Bought one for $500 and it was JUNK. Found several other long blocks from $700 to $1k.

yea, the ratings changed from 3 things. the heads started to flow better(start to flow the same as the LT1 irons), the exuast got 2 cats, and the intake tract was changed.
The head castings that are "bad" outta the box, but the ones you want for porting are like 347, and 643, or something like that. The later castings are the thinner better flowing ones, the ones I don't a # for. I have a habit of mixing numbers up.
You do know that all F-body long blocks had Aluminum heads? and that the iron heads were only on the B/D 260hp version? but I think the heads alone can be cored for that much from some porters.
the power went from 275 - 285 with dual cats, and 285-295 with the newer heads. then 5hp came in there with the intake, witch I think was off the SS, Or "ram air" model. i think there was a 290, rating, from the not the best heads and ram air. But I'm a caprice kinda guy, so I honestly donno how the 3 varibles played out, and what did what.

Launching!
never heard of a 295 version. the way i've always seen it is 275hp '93-'95, 285 '96 &'97 when they got dual cats, 305hp for WS6 and base Firehawk/SS and finally a 315hp option for the Firehawk/SS/CompTA from at least '95 and up, but i'm not sure about the earlier years of the Firehawk "93 & '94
