Default Few questions about spun bearings?

So I'm still learning a lot of the mechanical aspects of my car and I was wondering what exactly a spun bearing is. If you showed me one I wouldn't be able to tell you what it is, also what are some tell tale signs that your car has one? If caught early is it possible to save the motor? How badly can it damage the motor? I have no real reason to ask this I'm just kind of curious.

Well, actually crank and rod bearings are metal halves shaped like U's. They sit on the block or rods. The crank and rods rides on the oil between them, The term "spun bearing" is when the two halves completly spin around, this causes metal shavings throughout the whole engine causing knocking and low oil pressure. Once its spun, its spun..there is no cure, but to replace the bearings...if left for a long period of time, it can cause major engine failure. Be prepared for a overhaul...and a good amount of $$.

Yea, spun is spun, check the oil, it will have a silver glint to it. You will hear either a rapping sound, or like marbles in a jar.
