Bummer. Have you tried turning the wheel slightly? And making sure it is in park if you have an auto? Just a thought.

My guess is that the linkage between the shifter and the switch are out of whack. Jam the shifter further into park, or not so far, etc.

Good luck -- Gary

A4, right? The linkage of this shifter is not going to where it should and not releasing the selenoid, happened to me, and I freaked out too.
Push pull on shifter and it will eventually release.
It happened in my 94 when I wedged the scanmaster btween the console/tape holder and the bottom of the radio, it misaligned stuff, removed the scanmaster and all was unbound.

The keys are out now...I wiggled and moved everything and they came out...thanks guys! Is there a fix for this? Is the interlock actuator not working right? Ormaybe a miss alignment issue...can anyone run through the steps.

Ah, the BFM (Brute Force Method).
The shifter needs to be firmly in park in order to release the key. Perhaps the linkage is slightly out of alignment? Just a thought.
