Default Annoying Cam Question

I know this is one of those questions that every noob asks but I couldn't find anything. I am going to do a cam swap in the next couple of weeks! I Have a 95 Lt-1 M6 with headers, 4.10 gear, but with stock heads! When I change the cam I plan to change the valve springs, and add 1.6s. Here is my question. What is the best cam! I really want to stay away from twisting any more than 6500 rpms because she is a decently high milage car.I also want to make as much power as possible without doing any more head work than the springs, lifters, and 1.6s. If possible I want the cam and springs combos and a round about price. I am looking on spending around 1500 dollars. Thanks- Derrick

Go for the LT4 package. It will fit your budget better than buying everything separately.

cc503 or custom cam...or maybe LE1? not sure how high people are spinning with the LE1 though.

Balling on a budget that is definitely the best choice. You'll get solid gains within a safer RPM so you won't have to spin the car up too high to get the most out of the cam.

It sounds a lot meaner than what it actually is, but it isn't by any means weak sauce.

I've been looking at the crane 227 for my car if i cant get my car to work right. specs are 210/224 low .500 lift with 1.6 on 112 LSA. there are some guys that have gone deep into the 11's with this cam, but they had the setup dialed in perfectly. like mentioned before the hotcam kit is good if your on a budget. if you want some other cam choices search for the gm846, cc304, cc305, xe503, LPE 211. these dont spin too high and make a lot of power under the curve. also look into running b-body cams, which get those 4000lbs+ into the mid 12's cam only. Use the search funtion and report back. good luck!

I keep hearing bad things about the hot cam! As far as the money goes its not so much my budget, its what I figured I would have to spend. I just want to make as much power as possible! I mean I would assume I could go bigger than some people becasue I have a 6 speed and 4.10 gears so I wouldn't be as sluggish out of the hole if I was out of my power curve, and some people need a stall with a bigger cam but not me because of the 6 speed! But to go bigger I may need head work?!?!? If there is a better way to make power for under 2 grand let me know. No Bottle!!! Thanks though for your help so far! How much time do you think I will cut off my 1/4?

If you want the most power out of your setup, you might want to consider going custom grind. Guys like Bret Bauer, Futural, Joe O, and a few others i cant remember off the top of my head will get you going in the right direction. Just remember that the biggest cam isn't always the best, IMO most people go with big cams on stock heads just to give themselves some room when they go with ported castings. It just happens that they get the setup running pretty damn good on stock heads. like mentioned before do a search for FrankZ28 (IIRC), he's running the crane 227 cam and went 11.4@11x. he swapped it out for a bigger cam by Joe Overton and went 11.1@120. That's pretty damn fast considering he's cam only.

if your looking to go mid to high 12's then just stay bolt-on's. I ran 13.03 @102 with just LT's, stall, and et streets. once i had full bolt-on's and tuning i ran a 13.3 @105 on street tires with a 2.3 60ft, that was with me getting into 2nd gear before i went WOT. if id of ran it on my old setup then i was shooting for 12.6@108 on a perfect launch. IMO id invest in a good set of tires like et street radials and some drag wheels. 6-speeds tend to trap better in the 1/4, a good 60ft with full bolt-ons will get you into the 12's.

BTW here's what i came up with typing Crane 227 in the search feature

Appreciate it! Well I mean if I go better than that I would be lot happier! I appreciate all your help. Have you heard anything about the Lunati Voodoo Line Part # 60105? If you get a chance take a look at it and see what you think! Lunati Cam

these are the application specific cams' for the LT1/LT4. By looking at these id go with the 211/219 which is what the LPE211 looks like, or the 219/227. Its about the same as COMP's XFI cams.
