Default Rod knock

A friend of mine has a 96 TA and says he has a rod knocking. He's thinking about pulling the motor and putting a stroker in it. So i have a couple of questions. He would have to pull the motor at his house, so what's easier, out the top or drop it down with the k-member? We are both technicians, just not GM and don't have a lift to use. So i'm just looking to see if anyone who has pulled a motor at home has any advice.

You are in for a day of fun. I dropped mine out the bottom, but some of these guys have gotten them out with Cherry Pickers.

the easiest way is to pull it out of the bottom, so i've heard.... but since you don't have a lift then it's not so bad pulling it from the top, i'm about to pull the block on my t/a tomorow morning, i have EVERYTHING out of the engine bay except the pcm and the block, i'll most likely take off my hood to make it even easier but it looks like its gonna be pretty simple, but you'll definately need a weekend and a couple 24packs if you plan on going this route

Have pulled and reinstalled mine from the top 3 times.

Not hard and especially if you do not have a lift, I would do it this way.

Here is a thread walking through one of the motor swaps we've done on my car.

Ive always done it from the top, the worst part is the engine to tranny bolts.

I have done it from the top and bottom, if you have a jack that can get it high enough to get the motor out from under it that is the easiest way. Out the top is not that bad, but I definatly prefer out the bottom.

Really the only thing from the top is you have to tilt it so it clears the cowl. Wouldn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

DropTopFireChKn, I didn't take the hood off mine I just loosened the shocks and had my girlfriend hold the hood and my dad work the cherry picker and I guided the motor. Might save you some trouble especially if the car maybe sitting outside for awhile like mine did.
