I'm interested in this too? How about putting a SBC into an F-Body? I'm tired of these f'ing LT1 problems and I have a perfectly good crate motor waiting to go into a car.

Yes it will.....although you need a different flywheel since the SBC uses a 2 piece rear main seal vs. the LT1's one piece style. I believe that McLeod offers a flywheel for that conversion, although I could be wrong on that.

All 86 and later gen I sbc's and most GM crates have a 1 piece rear mail seal. Everything should bolt right up.

My car is proof of that.

They have always had the same Bellhousing bolt pattern, but as stated earlier, the cranks and flywheels are different, plus the clutch is different too, but you want to know the magical thing? The transmission input shaft has the same spline pattern as most of the older transmissions, like the Muncies and the T-10s, pretty cool huh

The only SBC that was ever truly "externally balanced" from the factory is the 400. The only issue is 2pc vs 1pc rear mains. Since my engine is a 1pc, I use an LT1 flywheel, t56 and bellhousing. I've seen t56s with a 2pc, I think you just need a custom flywheel.

so can you just have a stock lt1 flywheel weighted to match the 400?

I don't know if you could use a stock LT1 flywheel. From what I understand 2pc rear main engines used a flywheel without a weight attached to it because they had a balance weight on the flywheel flange of the crank. When they switched to the 1pc (1986) the 1pc main wouldn't fit over it so the weight was moved to the flywheel itself. I think you'll need a custom flywheel. You should look on thirdgen.org because I know for sure someone there has a t56 with a 2pc engine.

I have a t56 on my '76 2 pc rear main 383. I had to get a custom flywheel since i had a 2 pc rear main and 400 crank. Fidanza makes one, mine is centerforce. Nice piece but pricey!

so the T56 you have work on your 383 because I am doing same thing on my car I didn’t know if I had to change the bell housing and I guess you had to change the flywheel because you have a 2 piece rear main. Did you had to change you clutch system as well
