Default oil pump mounting

Hi again,
it might be a bad time to ask but are you suppose to mount anything between the oil pump and oil pump mount on the rear main?
when I took off my old pump there was nothing there so when I put my new one on I did not put anything there ( gasket or sealant )

That is normal. It mounts right on the rear main cap.

It's surrounded with oil inside and out, so there's no need for a gasket. Just don't forget the windage tray.

It is a machined surface and doesn't need a gasket to account for a uneven surface.

I'm pretty sure that's the right answer for the wrong reason. Heads, block, waterpump and intake are all machined surfaces and still use gaskets.

Sorry, the minor leak that may occur from this wouldn't be detramental to the engine. But the fact that it has a 7/16" bolt torqued to 65 ft/lbs. should also come into play.

When you do put the Oil Pump in, set the Pickup in position, and take the time to get it welded to the Pump. Just a little added insurance so it doesn't fall out. I saw a Car the other day where one fell out after a re-build. Weld it and don't worry about it.

If you're doing it with the motor in the car, I have no idea, lol. I'd say use a hoist to pull up on the motor and take it off the motor mounts. Then you should be able to get the pan off and then get to the pump.

The hardest part, to me, is the constant switching between metric and english wrenches/sockets. Dropping the K-member isn't as hard as it sounds.

You will have to drop the K-member to do it.

I would get a Chilton/Haynes repair manuel and it will walk you through step by step. They are only about $25.
