Default Switching 383 setups, have a couple internals questions.

I am currently tearing apart my 383 and switching motor setups completely. I am not even remotely happy with the performance of the car as it was built before, so everything but rods and crank are being replaced. The motor has about 6000 miles on it, with about 15 bottles of nitrous ran through it, 150 shot. Here are my questions.

Crankshaft rod journals. What are the sizing requirements? It is the eagle 4340 assembly. Need to know what the tolerances for roundness are, also OD size tolerances. I would imagine they should be true to a few tenths, just would like max allowances.

Eagle h beam rods. Need to know ID tolerances for the rod bearing area when assembled and torqued. How much out of round is allowable before they should be remachined? The bearings had no abnormal wear, but I would like to check everything before reassembling with new bearings.

Crankshaft end play. How much is allowable?

Thanks for any help on this, Nick.

Chilton/Haynes makes a repair manuel that is about $25 and will have all of your questions answered in it. You could also do a internet search and get this info for free. On your rod bolts they should be just fine unless you were turning 7500+ rpm for most of that mileage. If you had the L-19 rod bolt upgrade then I wouldn't even worry about it.

I have the haynes manual. I figured the specs would be different than the book says since this is not a typical rebuild. I wanted some specs from a high performance stand point as I will be pushing much more power in this application. I guess I should have stated that. I plan on 450+ to the ground on motor, plus a 200-250 shot on top of that, so in the neighborhood of 550-575 to the ground on the bottle.

What rpm are you planning on turning the motor? The rule of thumb is .001" per 1 inch of circumference according to Oliver.
