Default fans are turning on all the time!!

I installed a 160 degree thermostat a couple of months ago and since then, for some reason my fans are constantly kicking on and off around 165 to 175 degrees when sitting and when driving. However, I haven't tuned the car to turn the fans on earlier yet. It only does this sometimes, other times, when sitting it will go up to 210 220 or higher until the fans usually kick on, but what would cause this to happen? Did I not get the air out of the system or something? What could that cause this?

Did you get it programmed for that Thermostat?

Don't feel bad, mine do it too and I don't have a clue what the problem is. My gauge doesn't read out my temp either so I dunno. I replaced the in-pump sensor and that didn't do anything, next one is going to be the one in the head. I have a Hypertech sensor for just that, I just have to find the darn thing. Problem there though is that's just for the gauge. If it fixes it, I'm not going to complain.

No I haven't yet, that's why I'm confused. the fans shouldn't turn on until around the hot range like 3/4. I will eventually getthem programmed, but I'm poor and I have to save up to buy the program and cable for my laptop. Plus, I'm gonna witch to OBD1. I hate OBD2. I've always thought 95 was the best year of any GM. That's the "easy to mod" year.

The reason the fans come on so early is because your car has detected a problem and tripped a code. Get it scanned. And you dont have to have it programmed to change the t-stat.

I figured mine out. Since I tuned it for a 160 stat, since when my gauge DID work, it showed around 160, so I figured that's the TStat that was in there. It's not, it runs around 205. I put the scanner on it and did the Monitor option to see how everything is in real time. That and my Drv O2 is fried heh.

I know I don't need to to change the fan settings, but there isn't a point in having the 160 thermostat in there if the fans aren't going to turn on until it's 250 degrees. I will get it scanned though. That's a good possibility.

well, I scanned my pcm for codes and there aren't any, which is good, but that doesn't solve my problem as to why the fans have a mind of their own.

Keep it cool, sure, but 1) They're LOUD 2) Constant use burns them out faster.

I agree on the manual fan switch. I might have to do that myself.
