Default gauges suck

okay, i bought a 1995 t top z28 2 days ago and i thought the gauges were a little off, well just the spedo anyway. well i put like 10 bucks yesterday (gas)cause i still had like 3/4 gas, well i go to pick up my girl from work downtown at 1am and the car dies and wont fire back up. i've owned a 1994 z28 since i was 18 and have replaced the opti-junk 3 times. so im pissed off in bed thinking i was gonna have to tear the whole car apart this morning and change it out, then i cant remember if i've seen the gas gauge move for the past day. well i put some gas and it started right up, im happy but at the same time i feel like a jackass but at least i dont have to change the opti!!! yet anyway.....

Same thing here. First 1/2 of the tank, I feel like I'm getting great mileage, then it just dives after that and brings me back to reality that this is NOT a practical car. I just make sure I fill it up before I hit the 200 mile mark on that tank.

Yeah , This about happened to me when I first got my TA. I later found out that the gas tank is kind of v shaped so there is much more gas in the top half of the tank then the lower half.

ya me too i just bought mine and drove it home to winnipeg from cincinnatti. Almost didn't make it to the gas station in grand forks because after 1/2 it started to drop pretty quick. Car wasn't bad on fuel though 415rwhp and i still got around 23 miles/gal. on the m6 : )

Since you all are on the topic of gas gauges, does anyone's needle sway side to side when turning? Like it can go from half full to empty with a hard right turn. I'm not sure if it is normal on older cars, or my sending unit needs replaced.

just the fuel shifting around in the tank causing the sender to read incorrectly...same thing under hard accel/braking.

Let me get this right.

You put like 2 1/2 gallons in your car and expected to go more then 50 miles?

When ever I get a new car I am carefull and make sure I do things like change all the fluids and FILL the tank full to get an idea of what it will do and I am carefull to run it down lower and lower till I get to where I am filling it with what the book say it takes.

I got to tell you If I am only putting 10 bucks in a tank that takes $56 to fill I am not expecting to go far

The 11th commandment of LT1 ownership: when thou reachest 1/4 tank, thou shalt proceed most expeditiously to nearest yon purveyor of petrol.

I have owned my car since new, and I have never trusted the fuel estimator. I use the odometer exclusively. I don't think I have ever seen the 'needs gas" light, which I think it has.

I had my fuel tank gauge act kooky on me one time. I had not filled up to full capacity for several weeks, and when i did the gauge went way past full, and stuck there. It finally came back down to where it needed to be several trips later.

Mine does this and has as long as I have had the car. Since I don't drive it everday, I just live with it (and fill-up after about 100 or so miles)

fuel gauges in general seem to suck. on my 01 3.8 i get great mileage to about 3/4 full...then the needle moves quicker and quicker. takes the same amount of time to go from 3/4 to empty as it does for full to 3/4

i have autometer gauges in my 79...when the needle hits 3/4 of a tank...i need to fill up 9.5 gallons of gas lol. and this is in a 21 gallon tank

Can't top my Z. When it gets to 3/4 full it's empty. First time I filled it up, I thought the needle was gonna break off it was pegged so hard. I ask a mechanic to take a look at it while he was replacing the power window motor and door lock actuator (didn't look like a job for me). He said looked like someone broke the sender while they were putting the pump in it. Unfortunately the sender does not have its own PN. After I installed my pump in the T/A, you were out at 1/4 tank so the senders must be ultra touchy.

Your temp gauge in the car runs off the sensor in the head and the fans work off the sensor in the water pump. Two different things there, but I recommend getting the gauge working. Look between 1 and 3 header tubes or manifold whatever you got and you'll see the one wire sensor. They're easy to screw up. Trip meter is broken but the ODO is fine? Does sound like problem is in the cluster.
