Really want to CAM, help on what to do.
So i really really want to cam my 97 Trans am, but the thing is i can't afford much and i was wondering, whats the smallest cam i can get to go in stock heads. or how can i minamize my cost if i have to to do some vavletrain work and what will i need.
I was thinking along the lines of LT4 status or something that wont dent my wallet. Thanks

do u have supporting mods such as full exhuast, cai, tb, etc...? if not i would do those mods first. but if so i would do a cc503 cam with stock heads. also get comp 918 beehive springs. ur also going to need a tune.

Are you after dyno numbers, track times, drivability or what? What I do is start with either the biggest restrictions or what will give me the most gain for the $ and then work my way up. Here are some dyno numbers and graphs to look at for different mods. Your results will vary.

can do a hotcam for about 500...you can do a 306 now with stock rockers and crane 10308 spring only 110 bux...thats only 375-400 bux, then save and get nsa 1.6 rr and guideplates and install in a few weeks...just dont be taking it over 6400 or so with the stock rockers...thats what i would do...or save up for 3 weeks and get it all at the same time and install...should only cost about 700 all together...this setupwth a mail order tune i made 352 358 with stock heads and bottom end...i got high 11's out of it cam only

If that's all the money you have, get the hotcam kit. All of the little add-ons like gaskets and timing sets add up quickly.
P.S. And take that ridiculous hood off if you don't have anything to back it up.

Look around though, you can get it cheaper than that..price did go up, I got it when it was $529.

95lt1963: I would only recommend the hotcam kit if the main priority is doing a cam swap on a budget. Other than that it doesn't make enough power for me to do it and there are plenty of other options out there.
I wouldn't put that much cam in with stock heads, and you will have to get it retuned when you do get the heads on.

i only had about 650 i think in all my cam parts for nsa come prm mags arp studs crane 10308 springs and the cam...
265 for the cam (if you buy new)
30 for arp studs
250 for rockers(if you buy them new)
26 i think gideplates
110 springs
this is good enough youll never had to change any of the valvetrain components for a built motor ect...you can safely spin your valvetrain to 7200 not worry about anything flexing/breaking ect...
