Default Cam Question

Alright well i thought i read somewhere that with a 93 and 94 you have to get a vented opti and timing cover for a 95 and up. The cam i want to get is one from thunder racing and its the comp cams extreme 224/230, .502/.510 on a 112 LSA. Do i need to get the opti and timing cover for a 95 and up for this cam? And will i just use the timing chain set for a 93? BTW my car is a 93 Z28.

You should be able to get the cam made for your car if you want to keep everything else stock. You won't have to do any conversion. At minimum I'd say get a new timing chain, though, LT4 ed is an upgraded one.

All you need to do is shorten the drive pin to make a 94+ cam work in a 93.
Because the 93 cam gear is splined for the Opti drive there are no easy T.C. upgrades, you would have to switch to a vented set-up.

Your not using that big a cam so you won't need to spin the motor that high that the stock chain will be an issue. I ran the Lingenfelter 211/219 cam with the stock timing chain for years spinning to 6,000 with no issues.

Don't you also need to drill out the hole in the cam and have is splined for the opti? I've never seen a 93-94 opti or cam.

Nope. You can use a 95+ cam in a 93 just by shortening the drive pin. But you can't use a 93 cam in a 95+. I've never seen an aftermarket build ( drilled ) spefically for a 93. If you order it for a 93 they just give you a shortened pin or tell you to cut it. On a 93 the drive gear only goes into the cam sprocket and does not go into the cam itself.

Ok, I thought the cam was splined, not the cam gear. Interesting.
