Default Starter problems..........

is there any way to adjust the starter? I have a 94 M6 formula and when i try and turn it over i get a griding or slipping noise coming from the starter. I have checked the bolts and moved it around made sure it was tight, but it only worked for like 2 starts. Should i just replace it or what do you guys think? I don't want to start the car like this so any info would be helpful.

Thanks

You can try some shims. The way it was taught to me is that you want enough clearance between the tip of a tooth in one gear and the "valley" in the other gear to be enough to fit a straightened paper clip into.

Is this the stock starter?

No problem. Yep, Autozone, Napa, etc. all carry them. The shims themselves will have a hole in one end, and a slot in the other. Just remember to put the bolt that will hold the starter through the end of the shims that have the slot, so that you can add/remove as you need until you get the proper clearance without having to hold onto the starter the whole time.

I got mine at Kragen auto for $4.95 + tax and there is more than one so you can play with the distance.
