Default Disconcerning sound from engine bay

93 z28, m6, 152k

Ok, this is a new car for me, and when I first got it running, I heard what I thought was the alternator baring shot, a metallic grind/scrape coming from the general area. Well, This afternoon I changed the alternator and the sound is still there.

So now Im wondering. Would an empty a/c compressor pump make this sort of sound? The system is completely empty, and has been for the past 3 years. Someone also mentioned to me the waterpump possibly could make this sound, which I sort of dont believe, or.. Dont want to believe as ive only put about 300 miles on the car since Ive had it together.

That's what mine does. I charged my AC system for the first time since I"ve had it, and who knows how long it hasn't been working. I haven't had the car but for like 5k miles. Anyways, when the AC is off, it makes that nasty sound, like a pulley is falling off. I thought it was the Alt as well. But I jumped back in, turned it on, and turned the AC on and the clutch kicks in, and the sound goes away.

I guess I could go ahead and charge the system, Wouldnt hurt anything. I was/am debating an a/c delete, I never use a'c anyway. But, If it will postpone me taking the thing apart again, at least till I start mods, I think I'll charge it. Thanks for the info.
On the subject.. I see those charge kits in some auto stores. Will one of those completely fill an empty system? or will I need two.

Turn the AC on and see if the noise goes away with the clutch (the AC clutch engaged).

The sound is unaffected with ac on, or off. Of course, its still empty. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and replace the clutch or even the whole assembly. Id hate to have the thing lock up on me somewhere, and throw the belt.

Empty as in, no freon? If the clutch is broken and locked in the ON position, then the turning on and off of the AC wouldn't disengage the clutch. So the noise WOULD stick the whole time. Freon I believe acts as a lubricant for the pump, so no freon and a locked up clutch would burn it out I'd think.

If your AC works and puts out cold air, then disregard all the above
