What are your performance goals for the car? Is the car daily driven as regular transportation, or is it a weekend warrior? It's really hard for anyone to suggest a cam and converter without some insight as to the ultimate use of the car. It's also very subjective. What one person considers mild, another will consider radical.

also your gonna need some 3:73's and a rear end girdle to preload your rear end so it doesn't break.

If you are willing to run 1.6's, and upgrade your springs ... running a larger cam/converter isn't an issue. Vig 3200 stall with the cc306 (not cc305 which is too small imo) will make decent power. If you want a slightly larger cam ... goto the cc503. I am a big fan of custom grinded cams, but on stock heads, shelf cams are were it is at. Comp also has some new XFI grinds worth looking at. Going to 3.73 gears is alos worth it. Don't cheap out on stall brand, you pay for what you get. Also a 60 dollar tranny cooler is well worth it. Going with a bigger throttle won't hurt ... especially if you goto say a cam similar to the cc503. You will not see full potential from that cam large of a cam, till you at least get some minor porting done. Tuning is also a huge part of doing something like this. There is a better variety of cam choice, with a good tune ... it will also make it more tolerable.

I say go all the way and go heads and cam instead of waisting time and money on the stock heads. The difference between what I spent to put my cc306 in on stock heads and getting even LE1 heads is MORE than acceptable for the amount of power I would have picked up.
For converter, I say go with an adjustable one controlled by your left foot. Basically I say you should T56 swap the car.

The car is mostly a weekend warrior, I work 2.5 miles from home, and have another car too, but I would like it to still be a nice cruiser also. Just ordered performabuilt transmission with 3500 stall converter.

Sorry to argue, but a cc306(230/244 .510/.544 112) is bigger than a cc503(224/230 .502/.510 112). Those lift #s are w/ 1.5rr's, btw. I would suggest a Vig 3600 and the cc503 or, better yet, a custom grind. My vig 3600 works well with my baby cam(LT4 hotcam). That converter will work well with the cc503 as well. Again, sorry to argue, just wanna get the facts straight. Thanks
