Default car broke after WOT run

I just did a WOT run to 80......and afterwards I hear a clacking sound coming from the engine bay. All the gauges look good.

I pull over, shut it down, restart, same thing.
pop the hood.....and it looks like the noise is coming from under the T-stat.

So I am thinking opti or water pump. I was able to drive the car fine home......rpm's seem fine. Around idle it started acting weird, kinda bucking alittle like it was about to die from too much load, so I kept the rpm's around 700 and it was fine.
Drove it home, now its cooling down.

any thoughts?

Here's a video.
http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/...t=DSCF0562.flv

there is a strong smell of gas when it is running, and little puffs of white smoke out the exhaust. Its also running really rough.

When I put a screwdriver against the engine block, I can feel the grinding that is making the noise......but when I put the screwdriver against the top of the water pump, it is 10x worse there.

Leads me to think its something up front.

any help?

I really dont know what I am doing.

hard to diagnose over the net, could be the waterpump, timing chain sounds like at a guess, is the waterpump dripping out of the weep hole on the bottom of it? It might be your chain and it's throwing timing off & running rough.

i was thinking timing chain as well. i just dont see a water pump causing it to run rough even if the impeller went out in it. but since the water pump is driven by a gear thats turned by the timing chain i could see the issue sounding like thats where it lies.

exactly what I was thinking, little timing gear actually sits in a bearing that is held in by a plate with two screws, my bearing was shot which caused gear wear from the chain. This was 4 yrs ago when I was just running a stock engine with an 847.

So should I order a new chain........or what?
I am gonna start taking it apart later today.

Do you think I need new gear sprockets?
Also, should I get the LT4 chain, or the GM heavy duty set?

thanks.

I'd tear into it first see what's going on then order your timing set. The GM heavy duty set is just fine, LT4 would be fine too, it's a pretty stock setup the GM set is more than enough.

I'll find you a writeup on it. basically though you will pull your belts, radiator (easier access), hoses, crank dampner/pulley, waterpump, optispark, then loosen your oilpan about 3/4" in the front (have to loosen almost all your bolts), pull timing cover. I'll stop there and recommend you get a Hayes manual. It's not that bad of a job really but you still need to pull the gears, chain, etc, etc, R&R any bad parts and put her back together.

well, I was looking at timing sets, and the LT4 sets wont work w/o me changing alot of stuff, since I have a 93.
Argh.

While I have the front apart, how much harder would it be to put a cam in?

pull the intake, rockers, pushrods, lifters, replace all of that with good stuff including your cam. google shoebox camaroz28.com he has a good "howto" website and there are quite a few other good ones out there with purdy pictures and step by step guides.

I dont think I have the money to change all that......

What about the timing kits? Do you know what I can use since I have a 93 engine?
I found a comp cams kit, but its $510.....kinda expensive

Elec. w/p and true roller. Should be about the same as replacing the timing chain and you won't ever have to worry about it again.

You could use a standard SBC chain instead of the LTx style since you won't need the w/p gear......that is if you change to an elec. w/p. Also there will be less load on the front cam bearing from driving the w/p all the time.

I would find out what wrong with it first and then start getting parts.
