I want to be able to do all the work myself, like installing heads cams and such on my transam

do you think that this would be a good course for me to take?

"Practical experience in the rebuilding, overhauling, and machining of engine components of the internal-combustion engine. It is recommended that the student have access to an engine for overhaul purposes. First part of a two-semester program covering block boring and honing techniques as well as bearing installation. Piston and ring selection procedures will be covered. The basic block will be assembled."

I don't think that would be a good course. You don't need that course to work on your car, but it does sound like a fun course where you could learn some cool things. You would only use the stuff you learned in that class if you were to rebuild your engine yourself and have access to all the tool necessary to do so. Replacing Heads, Cams, Intakes, etc. won't require any special machining skills. Look for something like Automotive Diag or Auto Repair, they will get into the maintenance stuff that you would do like replacing parts, tracing wiring, driveability issues and other related items and should be much more useful when you are having problems with your car.
