Default new wheel/tire combo

some of you might know i had to sell my 19"s because i was blowing the tires off at 75mph. well i think i know what i want but i want to make sure its not going to cause any issues. i want to be able to cross the 1/4 mile in 4th, and i think this should do it. im looking at a set of chrome 18x8.5 fronts and 18x9.5 rears. the rear tires im looking at are the Nitto NT555r 305/45/r18. Nitto's website says they are 28.78" tall. i am running a 4.11 gear in my 12 bolt.

That is the same wheels I want to run, except I want the ones with the gray centers. I think they are great looking wheels that not every other f body is running.

i have to agree, im definitely partial to non-factory style wheels on f bodies.

you should cross the trap close to the top of 4th gear with 28's on 4:11 gears, but let there be no mistake you will never get any decent traction with the tire profile for an 18" rim, 28" diameter and a decent hooked launch might get you what you want crossing the trap but your ET will suck.

Those look ok for the street but you might consider some 15" drag rims with ET streets or Hoosier QT Pros for the track. On 28" tires out back.

If you get them, I'd like to know if you have any fitment issues with the 305 nittos. Thats the exact tire I was thinking as well. Also is your car lowered?

yes that the info i am looking for, i was figuring an 18" rim is probably close to 20" chrome to chrome. so about 4" of sidewall, yea i think your right, there not going to wrinkle obviously. but then again the car is mostly street driven, so i could pick up a set of 15"s with some slicks for the track.

the 255/50/16s et street radials i have right now are biting pretty nice off the line, but if i hammer down in the middle of 3rd, 4th, or even 5th gear they spin their asses off. i know its because i need some 305s

and no the car is not lowered

I personally have never seen 18" rims on an fbody, look good on vettes but I just can't picture them on our cars for some reason. You'll have to post some pics when you go that route.

Brett,

You've seen them on my ride, but strickly for the street. I'd have to agree that you would have better luck with 15 or 16" for the track !

i had 19" rims before. and i like the 15" combo you have but i just wouldn't feel safe with 3.5" wide wheels in the front driving on the street.

guess your right Jay, forgot, well yours looked good, guess it's just not real common.

as for the skinnies on the front, they are definitely something you have to get used to on the street, Biggest thing to get used to is braking on the street on skinnies, considering most of our braking is in the front and with skinny tires it can tend to get wicked if your not careful.

the guy selling them said the sidewall on the 305/45/r18 is 5.4"

do you think that is enough sidewall? or is it the actual tire itself, for the track i will surely need a sidewall that will wrinkle right?

what about a 17" rim with a 28" tire

or you know what i could do, i wonder if i could just get 2 15x10 pro stars or drag lites for the back, and 2 15x8s for the front and run a normal width tire on the front? think that would work?

I personally think 15x8's up front wouldnt look good at all....if it's mostly a street car I say get the wheel/tire combo u were looking at....Then get something for the rears for when you go to the track.
