Default looking for help diagnosing SES light

ok im asking this question on behalf of one of my friends cars he has a 97 Z28 A4 with about 65000 miles on it

he is throwing multiple codes and was looking for help diagnosing them, the codes are System rich bank 1 and 2 the code number fyi (P0172 and P0175) i just installed some pacesetter lt's but it was throwing the same codes beforehand. with headers i installed new plugs and wires plus two brand new ACdelco oxygen sensors, i also installed a new IAT sensor since he had one of those ebay crap sensors thats supposed to increase power but didn't change the problem

whats happening is that when you try to start it once it has been running for the day (like running it getting it up to temp, shutting it off and trying to start it say about 15 minutes later) it will be really hard starting and will actually be black smoke from it running so rich, the car actually runs really strong otherwise, im not sure if i can and cannot rule out the opti because it runs strong and never miss-fires throughout the power band.

this guy also just installed an MSD 6AL along with a blaster coil and didn't change the problem whatsoever

heres some more info he has a granatelli mass air sensor plus a breather instead of an oil cap, im thinking that could be a reason for it as well

let me know what you guys think if you've ever run into this before thanks and sorry for the long post

maybe there is a fault in the maf? if it is a running rich concern, that wouldnt point to the opti. if you pulled the trouble codes, i take it you have a scan tool. check to see if it is going into closed loop or staying in open loop. check it out and let me know

I think it's a MAF problem. Do you have a stock MAF to swap in there and see how it does?

What would it hurt? It's a 5 min swap.

why a breather instead of a cap? thats silly.

and yeah, check the fuel trim and see what the o2 sensors are reading. make sure they fluctuate, and check your vaccum also.
