LT1s do not cut the alternator at WOT, the alternator is capable of outputting about 1.6hp. Guys have set things up to kill the field at WOT and found no gain, one even found a small loss from reduced performance of all the engine electricals but was crank trigger, data logger, aftermarket computer, bigger fuel pump, electric water pump etc so it probably had a larger than normal load.
Many of us pull the serpentine belt entirely on the drag strip because we are able to remove the load of spinning the PS, AC clutch(this does disengage at programmable throttle input), and the load of spinning the alternator which is a parasitic load even without the field, this nets us a whole whopping .1 second in the quarter mile. If that is the net gain from removing the belt entirely, what real possibility is there for gain from shutting off the field?
Far as variable inline, look up Stewart water pumps.
