Its easy to look and try to take it out but actually getting the top bellhousing bolts is a pain in the ***. I got down to the last one on the drivers side and said f!@k it. I spent about three hours on that bolt and it didnt move.

anyways one of the sponsors on here should beable to walk you through it. Give one a call.

The key to the top bolts is simple:
a 36" long 1/2 impact extension bar with a 3/8 end
a swivel impact socket
1/2" air impact gun
Lift.

Oh yeah, and 'clearancing' the floor pan is likely needed too.

It can be done without air. But you just about have to have the stiff, strong, LONG extension and the swivel socket... and the right tools here are NOT cheap.

Spend 6 hours f&%$ing with it without the correct tools, you'll have it towed to a shop that gave you a price you thought was too high to pull the trans. And you'll gladly pay the 200 bucks or so they want to pull it and put it back in.

about that "fully forged and cant pull a a tranny", i know what is needed, its not hard. But these lt1's are queers to work on and you never know if there's a trick or not.

I talked toa buddy of mine and he said he had his tranny rebuilt and a new flywheel and clutch , installed for 1300. That seems like a good price to me.

I have had the tranny out without a lift many times. Thing is, unless you have a really tall trans jack, you'll have to have it pretty much on the ground anyway for the final drop and the initial install.

Ive taken them out on the ground, it freakin sucks. Get as much of the nose in the air, do as the previous posters stated, just make sure it doesnt drop, the case can be cracked. One of the lips of the servo on the side of my buds 93 4L60 trans cracked and he blew out the seal on the road. DUe to him dropping it.
