Default 1994 Scan Help

I have a 94 Bird LT1. I am having trouble retrieving the codes. I though it was old school, jumper A + B and read the dash, Wrong. Doing this only turned on the fans. I tried to do my homework here and it appears that I need a scanner for an 01/94 LT1. I bought a P.O.S. cheap scanner at Pep Boys for a 94 5.7 and the same thing happens. Plug it in, turn on the key and the radiator fans turn on. Nothing else. I am new, so I could use some help. This all started when I replaced a bad # 6 wire and at the same time put one tank of 101 Unleaded through the tank. Five tanks later of 91 the Service engine light is still on from and it does not run as smooth as it should. I already tried new O2 sensors, no help.

A bit about what it does, other than not give you codes, would be nice. If it runs, but runs bad, tell us how. Pull a plug from both side, see if they look like ***, and small like gas.

You need a scanner to get the codes out, jumper from A-B do not work on these years... take your car to Advance Auto, they will scan it for free and give you a print out with the codes, that way you get a headstart on fixing it.

Thanks both of you,

I will take it to see if I can get an Auto Zone to scan it. Pulling plugs are so much fun. I will pull the easy ones, 1 and 8, when i get a chance.

The parts shops around here don't scan OBD I, they can only scan OBD II. I don't know if its different around anywhere else but here its no go. I'd try to find a shop that would do it for free.

They're just lazy since OBD1 takes more time, and on some models it involves more steps...

Question.

The scanner, in the first thread, that I bought looks like it is nothing more that a box with a jumper in it from a +b. Is this scanner an OBDI scanner or is there something else I need? The local Auto Zone does not scan.

I'm having the same issues with my 1994 Z28. Jumping didn't work and I got an Actron Code Scanner from Advance and it doesn't seem to work either. The box even said it would work for a 1994 5.7L Camaro.

You guys pretty much have two options. Buy a $90 ALDL 12-pin OBDI cable and hook it up to a laptop. Install the software to scan and you'll be cooking with gas! OR take it to a dealer and pay some big $$$.

Doesn't take a dealer to scan the car. Some shops will scan for free, so you will then fix it there Yet, if you scan it, you'll be able to figure out what's wrong and do it yourself.

ALDL isn't $90 either. It's more around $60.

I believe it's $90+ S&H from AKMCables.com. I don't think they're a sponsor, but they seem to be one of the more popular brands to choose from. I only paid 60-70 for mine. I apologize if they're not a vendor, but I got mine from aldlcables.com and had 2nd day shipping to the house.

They sent me the wrong one at first (OBDII) and I wasnt too impressed with it. I ordered the OBDI USB cable and I gotta say... well done. The quality is excellent and it works great. Now I just have to figure the damn codes out so I can get it tuned right.

And yeah there's shops around who can scan it for you for nothing. I try to avoid shops though, since they assume you'll be getting work done there.
