Sounds exactly like both the vette and the ss I've changed before. Ended up both getting the opti on wrong. The vette was a 93 so it was splined and the ss was a 96 so it was a dowl. On the vette I had to set the engine to TDC and aline it that way. On the SS I was just dumb and didn't get the dowl in its hole and It still went on. Now I always start it up before I put the waterpump on so I'm not tearing everything down again. Good Luck

If it is running the same before and after I would look at another area...like maybe the EGR valve...that will make it run like **** and sound like it has a massive cam, but run poorly.

There may be a easier way, but heres how I did it. First off I Got the engine to TDC(I used the thumb in the #1 spark plug hole method ) Then I pulled of the cap from the opti base. I took a multimeter and placed the positive probe in the #1 spark plug terminal of the cap. Next I Took the ground probe and found the terminal on the backside of the cap that gave me a current when I sent a charge through it with the multimeter. So I then marked the top side of the cap where the terminal location was. I placed the cap onto the base and transfered that mark on to the base. Now I know where the rotor would be compaired to the base when its at TDC. Now I can mount the opti base with the rotor pointing the my referance mark and Its a sure winner ( took me a few tries to get it on the spline just right). Next just place your cap back on and button everything else up. Hope that long mess I just wrote helps any, but it worked for me.
