Default Cam Question?

I drive a 95 Z28 with headers, ory, catback, cai, and a 3000 stall and I am looking at the LT4 hot cam kit on summit. I know I will need a new timing chain is there anything else? Also I've heard with the hot cam it doesn't need a tune.

How old is your water pump? if it has alot of miles on it and you are going to have it off I would put a new one on.

you will not need new lifters, nor pushrods. although you can still drive the car withouth a tune, it is best that you get one, to maximize the perfomrance you can gain from the cam. otherwise, the cam is just making you run richer.

most people do the LT4 km when they put headers on the car. So, with a cam I think it would be a good idea.

A stock replacement chain will be fine...You can also get both the gears too and replace the whole set...The stock chain is plenty strong...

^^^agree I would highly suggest cloyes stock replacement chain and gears, you get the solid cam gear like the lt4 ed set has. Melling on the other hand has the slots cut out of the cam gear, i have a picture of one of those gears in 2 peices where the center broke away...so just go to an oreillys store and ask for the 3 peice timing kit.

The springs in the "kit" may be fine at first with the lightweight LT4 valves but are marginal at best with LT1 valves and will quickly wear to insufficient, the right thing to do is get better springs right away.

If you think you can modify the engine without needing a retune I suggest you put the wrenches down and step away from the car till you learn better.

The HOT cam works fine but nothing more, for the expense and effort involved I would strongly recommend more research first.

This is why I was trying to find out some information i'm sorry I don't KNOW IT ALL like you. I had heard the hot cam didn't require an immediate tune because it is a very mild cam.

I don't want to speak for 96caprice, but I think he and to some extent, myself have seen some crazy advice and some really bad decisions made based on some misleading info on these, and other forums...The HOT cam is not bad, but there are better off the shelf cams that retain the drivability and smaller duration with bigger lifts that these motors love...To get the most of any cam you really need to tune the computer for the cam otherwise you are wasting your time and money on the swap...

I have used and recommend LPEs 211/219 .533/.560 on a 112 lsa cam...Imho its better than the HOT cam really wakes the motors up...If you call LPE they can set you up with all the necessary parts to do the swap, but you'll still need a tune to get the most from the cam swap...There's also the Comp cams 305 and 503 both are samller duration, larger lift cams...

Like I said before, the HOT cam is an OK choice, but there are better ones...Why not research all of them before you swap cams, which is no small job...Lots of your cam decisions will also ride on what your goals for the car are....Take your time and look around a bit..Good luck...
