I don't think the VSS wires run through the harness, the tach wire does, that's where i tied in for my shift light. Were you messing around behind the passenger side kick pannel? I believe theres a connector behind there that has the VSS signal and tach signal to the cluster. Maybe you left it disconnected or accidentally disconnected it or cut a wire or something? Just look around everywhere you were working for cut wires or disconnected wires.

First thing I'd do is make a HUGE *** wire for a voltage tester and then have it ohm out or ground out (whatever it's called when it beeps at you when the wire is good). If all is fine there, then I'd look elsewhere.
I'm still pretty sure our Tachs run off the coil, and the only thing I can think of happening is that either you didn't use a grommit for the hole and sliced the wire, or maybe completely cut it :\
