Hope this helps..
I am in the process of re-searching a 383 rebuild for my car.
From what I understand, when a motor is rebuilt and the rotating assembly is internally balanced by the builder, and if you were to use your original flexplate, you would need to remove the weight on it or get an internally balanced flexplate.
As stock engines are externally balanced, you will need the externally balanced flexplate.
I could be wrong, but there are tons of more experienced guys here who will correct me if I'm wrong..
Just trying to help out.

sbc are internally balanced except the 400, until 87 or so, 1 piece rear like the l98, and lt1 are external but the bolt pattern for the crank is different, So a 1 pics flywheel wont fit a 2 piece so you need a externally balanced for a 1 piece rear. i think but ask when you order it.

If you engine is a "factory" LT1, you'll need the flex-plate with the counter-weight.
However, most LTX rebuilds will be internally balanced and use the flex-plate without the weight.
