Default pcm tune cam question

this might be a dumb question but,
i am putting in my cc305 cam, and having my heads ported and polished,
is it a necessity to send in the pcm to be reprogramed, or not?

Not necessary as this cam can run on stock programming. However, that said it's probably a good idea as they (PCMforless or MadZ28) will adjust the VE and PE tables for the higher air flow to give you more power and bring it alive a little more. My suggestion is if you're gonna get these done go ahead and have the PCM done as well and to save some $$ just get a cable and do the email tune where you load it yourself as it's only $75 and they will tweak it for 6 months. Good luck.

I would go as far as saying that it would start on stock tune, but if I were a betting man, id say it run like trash, and work alot better with a tune

I have a custom cam, not a whole lot more than the "hot cam". It ran fine with the stock tune. I have a whole lot more than a cam and I'm running a "stock tune".

well then i guess its all in the car then, because a friend of mine installed a hotcam and the car would barely idle let alone perform well on his stock tune....if your spending all this money on heads and cam, why not get a tune? why skip a step? its just not logical.

A tune would be a good idea. I could tell a drastic difference once I plugged in my new Pcm from Madtuner. The throttle response is alot more crisp and my idle is alot smoother. Plus if you have anything that annoys you... (cough cough) SkipShift!, you can have it removed along with a few other things. Its worth the money.

yeah for spending the $ on h/c, a tune is a no brainer and will help a lot.

What year is your car? If you have a '93 you need a chip if you have a '94 you will need a OBDI cable, if you have a '95 you will need a cable with an OBDII connector, but you still have and OBDI computer. All computers '96 and up have OBDII computers. Go here and it will explain it and where you can get one. Check ebay and make sure you get the USB version or if you have a serial port on your computer you can get the serial version. Also, you will need the CATS tuner program to flash your PCM, download it from here and purchase the definition file for your year car and then use the program to first download your original file and save somewhere and then use it again to upload the new file from PCMforless or Madtuner. Here are some links and remember if you have a '93 or '97 newer car you will need different software. Do some searches here as there are some good writeups.

Tuner Program:

Cable:

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

FYI - Found this on the forsale forum, and this is what you will need if you have a '95 car.
