Default sputtering??!!!

I ran my car low on gas.so low that it was sputtering.after i filled up it still ran like crap.I changed the fuel filter..didnt work.I think there is a fuel purge somewhere.ill try looking for that today.if there is no air in the system then could my fuel pump die from sputtering for an 1/8 mile?

DO NOT RUN LT1 CARS TO EMPTY! Ive seen it make a fuel pump fail going on empty....

but they usually just quit...

^^^True. Your fuel pump is encased in a plastic tank that is filled with fuel. This fuel helps keep the pump cool. Running the tank very low or empty will risk allowing the pump to overheat and burn out.

Hook up a fuel gauge and find out where your pressure is at during idle, cruising, and WOT.

damn, I need to be careful w/ that then. I usually run all my car pretty damn low. My old turbo integra was the exception since I had to be careful w/ detonation.

I guess I'll follow the same rule w/ the T/A.

well today I ran my car pretty damn low. The gas station wasn't very far, but it just wouldn't get there. I had to go and buy 2 gallons of gas. I filled it and now it seems this ******* car doesn't want to turn on on the first firing. I'm thinking I fucked the fuel pump.

yeah i def. burnt up a fuel pump like the first day i got my car lol... didnt know that the gas gauge wasn't like dead on accurate... and i got on the backroads with like a quarter of a tank, which i know now means get to a gas station quickly... lol i was right across the street from a BP and it started sputtering and cutting out... so i pushed it into the auto zone parking lot and had to try to fill it up enough from a cleaned out gatorade bottle to get it over to the gas station... lol i kept running over and getting like 50 cents of gas at a time and had to make like 4 trips, but finally i got it to start... ill never run the car under a half a tank now though
but yeah after that incident i noticed the car wasn't running as strong as it used to, and on the coldest night of the winter i was takin a drunk buddy home and die right in front of the racetrack in speedway... needless to say that wasn't a fun night sitting out in shorts and a t shirt waiting on a tow back to my apartment...

yeah I was on my way to fedex, and I planned on going to the gas station right after. Then, traffic got in the way and I totally deviated from my planned route. So I forgot about getting gas. Then it was too late.

Also I just replaced my battery yesterday after I had to get a jump at school because the car wouldn't turn on. Battery seemed fucked up. I don't know. But, still it takes awhile for the car to turn on. Not like before.

Should I be worried about the pump quitting on me in the near future? Should I just replace it as soon as possible?

Running dry is not good for the motor, but it doesn't guarantee that it will damage the motor. You need to check your fuel pressure at KOEO, cranking, idle, cruising, and WOT to see how healthy your pump is. Post up your pressures.

KOEO = key on, engine off. When you turn the key, but do not start the car, you should hear the fuel pump prime (build up pressure). It's usually best for your car to turn the key, wait one second, and then start it.

If you consistently ran it less than a gallon remaining, you will risk overheating your fuel pump. Most of the time when you fill up when its low, there's really ~2 gallons left.

BTW, if it wasn't mentioned, LT1 tanks are metal. LS1 tanks are plastic.
