Default Talked to a local machinest

So, I just called because I was curious how much it would cost to have my stock shortblock serviced and looked over and even possibly rebuilt. 1800 is what they quoted me. . . .doesnt that seem a little steep? - I could buy a forged budget 355 assembly for that much!!

How much (expecially if i keep everything that's already in it would you guys think it would run me?) I was thinking in the 600-800 range tops. . . .O.o

if there doing all the work?? yeah its a little steep depending where your located, all of my machine work was done for about a grand, then i had to purchase my internals and but it together myself, so that might not be that far off for having it rebuilt by someone else.

I planned on buying all of my internals and doing the final assembly myself (if it came down to it i'd like to keep what i can) all i wanted was for it to be balanced and honed pretty much service the block and balance everything. . . .

That sounds about right, depending on what you are getting done. I just had my block bored .030 over, hot-tanked, and inspected. Price was about $650. The guy I go to charges $400 to balance as well. I still have about another $2k to go, re-using the stock crank...

I had a local performance shop assemble my block For about $1,100 But that was decking the block .15 tourque plate honing, Boring it .40 over and freeze plugs, cam bearings, hot tanking it clearing the oil pan rails for the h-beams, Turning the crank and balancing the roating assembly, and all clevite bearings and assembling everything.. I just provided everything except the Hell fire rings.. Crank rods pistons etc... just to give you a idea

My shop only charges 400 for total block prep. for non stroker blocks. That includes cam bearing and freeze plugs installed, torque plate honing, .040" over, tanked, baked and painted.

I went to a simalar shop and they told me about the same price. Talked to some of the old timers about a good local shop and found one whos been around for 47 years and everythign (boring, balancing, decking, align honing etc etc) shouldnt be over 500.

I paid 350 for them to go .030 over, magnaflux, hot tank, cam bearrings, hang the pistons on the rods, and balance them, polish the crank, and deck it and put freeze plugs in it.

yup thats about what i paid to have the same things done to the block i had prepped for my SBC RX7 project

i had them punch it .030 over magnaflux, hot tank, cam bearings, i had the rods checked out and installed on new pistons, put the freeze plugs in it and i also had them check out a set of vortec heads, i had them magnafluxed, i had the seats opened up for larger springs and had the valve guides machined for more lift
and that all came out to be 450 bucks i was pretty impressed
