Default backfiring during idle

So I put in a new cam and before the car was having issues with a mis. After the cam swap while its idling it backfires and pops? Would anyone think its the opti spark? the wires are virtually new!

If your running the stock tune that's most likely your problem. That's a pretty aggressive cam, i'd start there and see if a good tune doesn't clean it up. How old is the Optispark?

Hate to say it, sounds like an Opti. Unless it's something goofy like a coil, but chances are you'll be needing to dig into the front of your motor again. Upgrade to an MSD setup, seal it up good and dont worry about it again.

Why would you just throw new parts at the car, before putting the car on the scanner to see if the opti is bad???

Definitely doublecheck the plug wires at the opti. Alot of times you can look at them 10 times and think they are right but because the way they come off the opti and wrap the block you'll get them mixed up. I had 2 and 4 on the wrong opti post and didn't know it for like a week. Car had a big cam and did the same exact thing (backfired and popped).... Rechecked them, found the problem and corrected it and no more backfire.... So i'm not questioning your intelligence just make sure you check and recheck your wires..... if you are ABSOLUTELY sure check all your spark plug gaps cause one hole ain't firing and you're probably getting fuel into your exhaust where it is igniting... you can also use a heat gun that reads temperature where you aim it. Aim it at all your header primaries and find the one that is way cooler than the rest. That's your cylinder that ain't firing right.....So at least you'll have the problem isolated to one hole....

you are probably right I will recheck them tonight but then I have a miss when im just driving also in conjuction to that and before i changed the wires it didnt backfire... so i guess i did put one on the wrong opti post. but I have a horrible miss when i give it any it a little throttle or alot it doesn't matter so I'm thinking that might be the opti also because the coil is new and the wires are new

Joe Overton came down to tune my car back in the day and I had installed the plug wires on the opti. I assured him that I had it right. So he tuned and tuned and tuned and couldn't get rid of this backfire.... So he wrapped it up for the night and told me that he would brainstorm and think of what it might be. I again assured him i had all the plug wires correct cause during the tune he asked me like 5 times if i was sure... Sure enough my buddy comes over and takes a look and he's like "dude #2 and #4 are crossed at the opti".... I was embarrassed to say the least and I called joe and we laughed about it... I uncrossed the wires and the motor picked up like 100hp no lie.....

I'm going to check them but we drove it earlier that day and it had a miss in it bad. so I changed to the new wires and thats when it started backfiring im sure your right im sure i got them crossed up somewhere but the thing is even if they are crossed it should still fire up which it doesn't want to do and when it does it will idle for maybe a minute and backfire and then die.... I had it tuned yesterday but even if they are crossed up it should still idle ya know
