Default losing water

I just finished puting a new motor in my 94 z28. the guy i bought the car from took the overflow off and now while i drive it it stays around 180 but when i turn it off it dumps water out of the radiator. I just bought a GM overflow and i will be putting it on this weekend. should that do the trick. the car NEVER runs hot and does not have any water in the oil.

any info is greatly appriciated, this is the 1st LT1 car i've worked on myself. I'm an LT1 virgin!!

While running the car stays near its operating temp of 180, but when it is turned off most get hotter. Hotter uncirculated water expands and 'normally' flows to the overflow tank.

Yes the tank is needed, and it should be fine once you have it in place. As always keep an eye on it.
