Default Cylinder bore vs piston marking

Hey all I have a question about the engine in my 93 Z28 that I have tore down and found way more damage than I had hoped. It's a Jasper Reman. long block with just under 70k on it. I started this project with plans on rebuilding the top end (cam, lifters , rockers, etc.). Once I got into it I saw exactly what I didn't want to see. All the bearings are scored pretty bad and the cylinders are like mirrors. The cylinders are measuring 4.029-4.032 but the piston tops have numbers stamped in that read xxxxxx -.040. My dad and I are assuming that the number on the piston is the oversize amount. If you do the math a 4.040 piston shouldn't fit in a 4.030 cylinder, right?

If anyone can share some insight I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Steve
