Default Loud Knocking Noice

my car has developed a loud knocking, slapping metal sound and im not sure if anyone else has had this. it doesnt do it all the time, mostly on acceleration and deceleration. it almost sounds like something hitting the fans but i checked and nothing is hitting them. i also though that it may have been something in the oil pan such as the pickup that had fell off but that was not it neither.

has anyone ever had this problem? any guesses or ideas of what it could be would be appreciated.

It's highly possible it's one of those things where you need to tear your engine apart and find out. Rod knock is highly likely. Can you pinpoint where the noise is coming? Is it obnixously loud? It's also one of those problems where you want to just stop driving the car unti you can find out what it is. The more you drive it the more likely it will cost you.

its really loud. im not sure where it is coming from. it wont do it sitting still. i dont think its rod knock because it really doesnt do it that much. i drove for about 30 minutes today it it might have done it 5 or 6 times. it just clangs for a second and stops. i had the oil pan off today and there was no trash in it just the pickup was in the bottom of the pan.

i see you have longtubes. maybe they are hitting the floorboards during heavy load (like acceleration/deceleration). are your engine mounts/trans mount a little spongy? that could be the problem.

not really. mostly at random times. it does do it sitting still sometimes but not long enough for me to get under the hood and listen for where its coming from. im pretty stumped on this one. i guess im gonna have to pull the valve covers off tomorrow. everything in the oil pan looked okay today. there was no trash or anything in it.

actually when i was checking for leaks today i watched the motor mounts while my dad revved the motor. they moved a little but didnt seem to move enough for the headers to be hitting anything. the tapping noise also seems to be too fast for it to be something like that.

hmmm... maybe the torque converter is going bad? I know they make a little noise when they're on their way out...

actually that may be a good guess. when a converter goes bad does it make the the transmission slip a little. when i was driving it today it slipped a little and didnt seem to shift as hard as usual, but i was thinking it may have been low on fluid and forgot to check it.

usually when a converter goes bad it comes apart on the inside sending stuff through yours transmission trashing it, and yes causing it to slip..

I dont think its that tho. Id just have to hear it, its coming from the front?? middle?? which side etc..

well, that's a great reason to get a new high-stall TC! haha. maybe you're mistaking the sound for a pinging noise? do u run low-octane gas? maybe a plug is fouled?

its deffinitly not a pinging noise or spark knock, this is LOUD. i always run premium gas. i gotta go to bed but tomorrow im going to drive the car tand see what it does. im prolly gonna pull the valve covers after work just to make sure theres not a screw or something bouncing around in there.

and yes i see a stall coming in my near future if this is the problem or not.

If it's really loud than more than likely it's Engine..
Where is the closest area you can pin-point the sound?

How is the Oil Pressure?

my oil pressure is good. about 40-50 cruising and about 20-30 idling. i drove the car today and the sound is definitly coming from under the car. i can kinda feel it at the pedals when it does it. kinda sounds like something bouncing around. it only does it in gear when accelerating and decelerating, but not all the time.

did you say the oil pick up tube fell off a few posts up? if it did you could of possibly starved the engine of oil while your were stopping

yeah but i noticed it right after it happend because of the drop in oil pressure. i put some extra oil in it and putted around until i got the car home. i dont think it is anything like a rod knocking because it doesnt do it but probably 1 time in 5 minutes of driving. im leaning toward the torque converter now and im gonna have it checked out by a transmission shop tomorrow.

Revving in Neutral isn't the same as accelerating, which puts a load on the motor. So it still could be bad mounts and the headers slapping something.
