Default diy cold air intakes

Has anyone had success with a DIY cai? I was reading the thread for the guy going for the bolton LT1 record and he mentioned he had a homemade CAI. How hard could it be? Would it really be any different than some of the others made? Plus $20-50 DIY vs $150 is a big difference with a tight budget! Also does anyone have a write up on how they made one.

Thanks!

Devon

its probly the easiest thing you can make...... just get some sort of pipe and route it to place that gonna get it cooler air...... not much engineering too it...... but the pipes and fittings do need to be tight so make sure everything fits up nicely

I know someone who used pvc pipe. Didn't look too classy, but it worked just fine and was very cheap.

Yea, PVC is the cheapest, I'd think that semi exhaust would be the nicest and if you buy it from a truck repair place they can probably mandral bend it for you too.

yeah but will exhaust pipe absorb heat too much? I would think that PVC would shield heat "decently". Maybe spray it all flat balck so it doesnt stick out too bad. Maybe a nice 3"-4" diam piece a few angle pieces, some clamps and a generic cone filter.

Heat sink really isn't a factor unless you're sitting for a long period of time. My slp cai is cold anytime I touch it after driving. It might come into play if you're sitting in line at the track but for everyday driving its not a factor.

I converted to a LS1 Lid style of an Intake..IMO it's better than any LT1 Elbow style CAI..the main reason is the length of travel and the direction of the air from the Filter to the Throttle body. Pretty much a straight shot with about 12" of travel..
