Block is basically the same, same motor mount holes you just need to reuse the brackets from the camaro. And you will have to do some trimming to get the distributor and air cleaner to fit. Probably more too, I'm sure someone will chime in with more info

Run a DIS system then. Crank trigger and the like. Might even be able to get away with the LT1's oil pump drive shaft if you make a plate to bolt in and plug the distributor hole.

If you are handy an alternative is to put an old style block and use the opti. Yes it can be done. Allows for an economical large displacement from 400 block, and large intake and use the modern electronic fuel injection for control.

There are a couple ways to do it, one is use a TPI distributor with opti guts another cleaner way is to make a different timing cover and mount opti upfront just like an LT1.

If it can fit, the standard TBI distributor is the exact same as the TPI. The TPI is just around 3/4" shorter. But if we're going to stick opti guts into something, I'd see about a crab cap then. Lots of clearance with those, but might not be enough to house said guts.

No we fabbed it like I said. It is in a 68 Firebid with a 406, using a 94 Caprice harness and an old distributor with opti guts. The next version is made with a hybrid timing cover and will mount an opti on a 400 block.

I have never ridden in a smallblock with jsut a cam that ran as good as a ls1 with jsut a cam...

im saying why ditch the fuel injected lt1... for something less refined, and is the same damn thing (Lt1 is pretty much a SBC.)... If your going to go through the trouble of swappin junk around, then put a gen 3 in it.

True!

but an LT1 is ~$700, an L$X is a great motor ju$t what i$ the word I am looking for? I hear all the time how inde$tructable L$X are: but like all SBC they aren't. A friend has a Z06 8 psi, meth, and pro tune it lasted 3,000 miles.

Now that is not indestructable and he made a mere 530 rwhp at dyno in a 6 speed sooo I will stay with junk, and my $$ in my pocket.

Because a carb motor is easier and cheaper to upgrade. No need to tune a computer to get things all dialed in right. Lots of people can work MAGIC with a carb on a motor as well.

I would agree some people are more comfortable with carb and afraid of electronics. But electronic controls handle change in conditions instride compared to a carb...and I would rather change parameters on a screen than jets etc and finding a carb guy is getting to be as easy as finding chicken lips.

I do not see Carb'd motors as cheaper to upgrade, but we all have our preferances

Well, I have a Carb Guru as a friend, and he's all self taught and only 29. He's been working on cars since he was about 13, and his first car was an 88 Escort which he made RWD and slapped a 283 in lol

At any rate, I mean cheaper as in you can find better parts than what you generally have by just checking out other cars. Like we stumbled across some 56cc heads he had in his garage for a SBC, and he had a pretty big Lunati cam laying around from another build.

I never got to see it either since I didn't know him then :\ I do have pics of a 350 in a 94 Mustang and I can get pics of the BBC in an S-10 though, both of those I helped him with.

Any updates on this? I'm thinking of doing this to a rolling chassis 93' Z28 thats been in my yard for a couple years, thinking of making it a dirt track car since its pretty beat. That and I think it would so beyond awesome to have a 4th gen that has an SBC with straight out exhaust sidepipes. Not sure if my neighbors will feel the same way lol.
