Default LT4 kit or Mix and match heads/cam & intake

I have a 97 WS6 LT1 with a 6 speed. I'm going to be putting a complete 12bolt rear end set up in it with 4.10's. and most likely the full compliment of suspension in back. I want to do some engine mods as well. I was thinking of doing the LT4 conversion with the hot cam. However I've been reading that I can get better hp by mixing and matching heads, cam and intake for less money. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Everyone will bash the LT4 Hotcam...but I think it is a great deal if your car is a daily driver and you're on a budget. If it's not a daily driver then money could be better spent elsewhere. I drive my car 500+ miles per week and don't have a lot of money to spend, I bought the LT4 Hotcam kit but then my clutch went out on me a week before it was to be installed

I thought the LT4 kit would be a good idea, but I'm still not sure. One web site said it would make over 425 hp on a stock LT1. I have a few mods to mine already. And I just put a new factory clutch in the car. However, if I get to the hp I want I will be most likely replacing that with a Centerforce DF. But as far as drive-ability I'm not too concerned. I have an 08 Audi A4 for my daily driver car. So the T/A is gonna be kinda a weekend type car.

best advice anyone can give you on here has already been said. Spend the majority of your time on here searching, it will save you a LOT of trouble. The LT4 conversion may net you 425 at the crank which is a proven reliable DD set up but if its a weekend car you money is best spent elsewhere. Search lloyd elliot and Advance Inductions you'll like what you see.

People hear flywheel numbers and don't know how to compare them to the usually quoted rear wheel numbers.

Rear wheel the LT4 conversion makes like 320 which is cam only territory, a good heads and cam package can mean 400 or more at the tires for about the same price. Meaning the LT4 package is a terrible choice.

The cam kit is NOT cheap once you figure in proper springs, the supplied springs are inadequate for the heavier LT1 valves.

The entire LT4 top end kit is IMO a large waste of money that will produce poor numbers compared to a much nicer and cheaper setup by Lloyd Elliot, Advanced Induction, or Port Masters, etc.

I will admit, it is fairly difficult to decide on which direction to go with. There are so many combinations out there now its unbelievable.

Well how much cash are we talking here? For heads, cam, intake manifold. the whole shebang. I'd like to get the car into the 11's. Obviously not just with motor work. I know for a fact a lot of that is gonna depend on what you have out back. You know rear end and suspension. I want to car to still be pretty drive-able. Like a weekend car as I said before. As far as the motor goes. I'd like to be able to leave it to where I could still throw a supercharger on it one day if I decided to go that far.

Hot cam kit is a great kit for those on a budget...not the full LT4 conversion. If you're looking at H/C then go with an AI or Lloyd Elliot set up, cam only though the LT4 kit is a good one imo

Does anyone know the easiest way to pull the motor? I've heard the only way you can get it out is from the bottom. (drop the k member and lift the car off of it) Is that true or is there another way?
