Default Picking the right torque converter

I am new to this forum, so bear with me. I have a 1996 Z28 with 146,000 miles on it. This car is only used for weekend and strip driving. I test and tune only on a 1/8 track. I have only 2.73 gears right now. I am switching to 3.73's before I install any stall converter. I have Pacesetter LT's, true duals, Comp T/A drag radials, and a Madz28 tune. The car runs 8.8's right now. I was wanting some advice on what converter to choose from. I was wanting to run about a 3000-3600 stall. Please, any advice would be very helpful. Thanks!

You have a couple of choices, the yank 3200 or 3600 stall, an edge converter, or a nice ptc converter. I personally have the edge, and am pleased with it. The only problem is the guy wants all of your specs of the motor and car so he can "calculate what stall you need", from what I see, all of his converters are around a 3400 stall. My brother has a 83 cutlass and both of us got the same stall...The ptc has only a 4 percent loss of efficiency on the top end, it is a great converter...if mine goes in the next few years I will go for the ptc. Yank is having a sale right now, contact them. I would get between a 3400-3600 stall converter, you will not regret it.

Since you're only racing in the 1/8 mile, I'd would consider a 4.10 gear instead.IMO

if drivability is not a problem, then go 3600. yank has some the best convertors i've ever run so i would highly recomend them.

Definitely agree with those saying 3200-3500 or 3600.....Ive had a 3500 for about 2 years now and really think I would have been mad if I went with anything smaller.

So stay in that area, you wont regret it

The problem with most tards is that they do not have a converter or whatever is asked and read the internet a little too much...for example I am sure you will have alot of people chiming in just get a yank 3600, it works, and yet half of them dont even have one. If you do not have a cam a 3000-3200 stall converter would be fine, but if you are interested in a cam or plan on doing anything in the near future I would go the 3200-3600 range. I daily drive my car with full boltons and the cc503 cam..it is a small cam, and i have the 3400 stall converter. Just because people have alot of posts doesnt mean that they know what they are talking about

Anybody know any cam and stall combinations that go good with each other?

This car is not my daily driver but need to be somewhat reliable for the street. Thought about going with a pretty big cam. Anywhere from a 5.25 and bigger but not too big. I was looking at comp cams or gm hot cam. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

Pick up the phone tomorrow and call Dave at Yank and tell him about your
goals for the car and he'll set you up with the proper converter.

I personally chose to go with a Yank 3600 to go along with my CC503. It sounds like you are considering a similar cam in the future. If the car is going to have a cam soon, I wouldn't go below a 3600 stall. I read about people all the time that go with too low of a stall and regret it after mods continue to get put on the car. Save yourself the headache of replacing the converter down the road.

Don't forget a re-tune once you get the stall...

SS 3600 is exactly what he recommended for me almost 4 years ago, for a bolt-on car, it's alittle heavier than a F-body. Works great for me.

Like stated give Yank a call or another good converter manufacturer such as Precision Inductries, Edge etc. The Yank SS3600 with the cc503 cam and 3.73's worked wonders for me when I was cam only. Yank wanted me to go with their SS4000 but because I was planning at the time to run nitrous they told me I should settle for the 3600. It drives great on the street and I would personally never run a stall smaller than a 3500 on even a bolton car but thats just me. I would give Yank a call to get a professional opinion.

Well it looks like everybody says to choose Yank, but what about others. Anybody know anything about edge and fuddle converters? Just like to get more advice on a variety of different kinds. Thanks!

Besides Yank, I've heard nothing but good from Precision Inductries (Vigilante) and Edge. I have heard more than my fair share of bad from TCI and Fuddle. If you do some searching you will see what I mean. There are probaly some other decent manufacturers but the three I first mentioned seem to be the best of the best.
