Default Tapered Deck

I currently have the engine, 383, out of my 96 z28 for a blown head gasket. I know the deck heigth tapers from .005" at the front to .015" at the rear. Pistons are -16cc forged dish and current static compression is about 10.3 - 1 . Can any experienced engine guys comment on this and if I should take this opportunity to machine the deck? If so, would you go .005 all the way across or reduce that closer to zero deck?

if the deck heigth is different, and everything else is the same, you've got different static compression ratios throughout the motor. i have heard of people running different static compression ratios in a motor to achieve the same dynamic compression ratio throughout the motor. the times i've known of it being done was with different cc pistons and a totally even deck heigth though. the really crazy serious guys use the camshaft, grinding each cylinder's lobes a specific way, with its own timing, duration, and lobe separation. fwiw, i would go for the zero deck heigth. suppossedly its better for emissions and power cause it pushes more of the intake charge to the flame front. kind of made sense to me.

You need the block "square decked" This will take care of the problem. Should have been done before the 383 was 1st assembled.

I would "zero" deck it and have it re tuned.

Thanks guys, I'll get it decked, what do you think about the 4 bolt splayed conversion? I've noticed the Eagles are a lot cheaper than the Milodon. Any preferences?

splayed main caps are just extra insurance. how high do you plan on spinning the motor and how much power you shooting for?

Motor has revved to 7K, I will probably limit it to 6800. RWHP dyno at 375, but I've since added a 150 wet shot.

Look at Competition Products, they have some billet mains caps at attractive prices and could recommend someone local to do the work.
