Default What does everyone think of this motor?

Hey guys. I ran across this in the classifieds section of another forum and was wondering what everyone thought of it. I would love to build my own motor, but I don't have the budget for it right now. Would this be a worth-while investment? Or does the price seem out of line? Thanks for your input!

sounds like a decent beast to me. i always wondered thou, if you bought something like that and expected all that to be done if something failed and you opened it up and it had stock internals with just the cam and all that other stuff, wouldnt that suck!?

i would most definitely have him sign a contract stating that the motor is in good working order, and offer a refund in full if otherwise.

If I was the seller I would have a hard time signing a contract on an engine(used or not). While I would have NO problem making a guarantee of what is in there I am not going to promise it will work well in your car. Say you have a horrible tune and wash the walls, forget oil, drop a bolt in the intake, over-rev it, etc. It just leaves a lot of error on the buyer's side that he could "say" was not his fault and he will have something showing that he was promised that it would work a certain way.

Not saying you would do this, but it would be hard for me to sign in any case...

Yes, that does sound like a good deal to me!

Good luck. Any kind of performance oriented engine is a hard and risky thing to guarantee. There are just too many variables that are out of the seller's control. NufNuffZ28 pretty much covered those reasons. The best you can really do as a seller is say hey the motor currently sits in this condition and is sold as is.

Are the pistons dished due to the block decking, to get it back down to the stockish level, or is it due to being a FI oriented motor?

That is exactly what I meant. Of course I wouldn't make him sign something that said : This motor, as sold, is in good running condition, and the seller will bear full financial responsibility for any error made by the buyer to the detriment of the engine's current condition.

I'd find out the comp ratio on it... If its lower than 10.5 and your not planning on running any boost to her I'd pass. Too many good deals out there in this day and age to get something that isnt exactly what you want. Hell, for 3 grand you can get a drop out LS1 and tranny throw her in (Says the guy with 5 grand into his 383)

I couldn't get the links to work. If you are interrested in the motor have the owner pull the oil pan. It should be pretty easy to get a rough measurement of bore and stroke. You will also get a good idea of the motors condition. It is also a good idea to pull the intake and valve covers. Gaskets are cheap when you are spending $3,000.00.

Good Luck,

Daren
