Default should i switch to mn12?

simple question: i have a decent sized cam (234/238) and 3:73 rear gears. i do all street driving and i was wondering if anyone has switched to mn12 trans and what their experiences were. excuse my grammar today, i've been writing papers all day and i'm all out of english.

You'd be taking your first gear total ratio from 9.9 to 11.0, so I would say no, if the ratio is all you're interested in. The MN12 does have the better double-triple synchro setup, so shifts will be better, but I don't think there's any value-added for your application.

Like 85MikeTPI said , the only real advantage would be the syncro design unless you wanted a lower ratio unit . It might be a little quicker out of the hole with a MN12 but it might also add to traction issues if you have them already .

For the street I would say no. I have one with 4.10s and the gears are EXTREMELY short (1-3, but especially 1-2). If it was a mostly tracked car, I would say go for it but if you do a lot of driving on the street, it kills your traction and makes roll racing a lot more difficult because it gives you a HORRIBLE dead spot in 4th, even with my 4.10s. I've been tempted to switch back just because I do mostly street driving.

And I have no first gear unless I'm on a well-prepped track with my ET Streets (not radials) after a big burnout. On the street, even after a big burnout with the Nittos, I have to feather it through first to keep from spinning like crazy. And in this cold weather second is also useless without a burnout.

If you have your clutch/hydraulic setup working properly, I doubt most people would notice any sort of difference shifting. My dad's 04 GTO and my 02 Z28 with the MN12 trans both don't shift quite as smooth as my brother's 02 Z28 with a stock transmission. It's all about the hydraulics, shifter, clutch, etc in terms of feel.

The LS1 F-body T56's have closer Gear Ratios. The First Gear is not as low as the MN12, and 4th is still 1:1, so 2nd and 3rd are at closer intervals.

^^^^^^^ And this is the difference between what is called a close ratio and wide ratio transmission . The close ratio means the gear spacing of the ratios are closer together while the wide ratio is just the opposite . Most of the time , when you increase the power of a vehicle or reduce the weight of it , the close ratio transmission is a better choice of the two available ratios .

i thought that until i shifted my buddies RSG rebuilt trans. butter! my car, has new upgraded hydraulics and a new clutch but a stock trans, and its tough and notchy. maybe a rebuild will solve my woes. my car has become really tough to shift. i find myself putting my body weight into my 2-3 shift sometimes

I have the M29 which has the same 1-4 gearing as the MN12, and I LOVE it! I still have 3.42's, but I think with 3.73's it would be a great street trans. I would prefer the MN12 6th gear though since it is .55 instead of .62 as in the M29.

Quick Reply: should i switch to mn12?
