Default lost second gear

Was doing a 1 - 2 shift and when i got it in 2nd i hear a loud clunk or pop and bad noises.... I thought i broke the rear... so i coasted most of the way to a stop. I wanted to see if it would move so i put it in first and it was normal.... all the other gears seem fine except 2nd... I have no 2nd gear at all. If i try to go in second it just makes a bad sound and doesn't go anywhere. anyhelp would be much appreciated. Is it safe to drive around without the gear? like go to 1st - 4th?

Thanks again

Matthew

You probably ripped the small syncro teeth off the gear . All other gears will work fine except for 2nd gear .

Will the car idle in second gear with the clutch out, much like it will in neutral?

As thesource said, you likely ripped the engagement teeth off of second gear - a common failure for these transmissions.

Time for a rebuild. A new second gear will be $129 in addition to any of our rebuild packages, seen here: http://www.tickshift.com

That sucks Matt, seems like we got a project to do when I come back down there. Don't look to bad to replace the syn.

That sounds right - I did the exact same in my old 98 SS. 2nd gear is toast.

It's definitely risky. In most cases, the magnets do a good job of collecting all the broken metal pieces floating around inside the transmission, but all it would take is for one of those tiny teeth to lodge itself inside another gear at the perfect time and cause even more damage, and maybe even potentially lock the transmission up at highway speed.
