Sounds like you took a tooth off of one of the gears.

Hard to say for sure. It could be something as simple as a broken or wedged shift key or you could have busted a tooth off the input shaft or cluster gear.

So, you have teh transmission out of the car (assuming so, since you said you turned the input shaft)

Why did you pull it out? Because of a noise? IN other words, you say you had teh tranny rebuilt, did you put it in and it "broke" so you yanked it? Or, you have not even put it in yet?
If you can turn the input shaft and it makes a noise/binds, could be a number of things. But also, need to know, does it make this noise when teh tranny is in neutral or in gear? Or both? Can make a huge difference one way or the other.
All of that being said and asked, it could be missing a shim/race, broke tooth on a gear set, damaged key, etc....

I fyou can give us some more details like the questions asked above, and also...if you grab the input shaft, can you "wiggle" it back and forth/in/out/side to side???

it was rebuilt by t56rebuilds
.com their no longer in business i guess i've been unable to find them, they were located in houston back then. parts installed consist of= carbon rings, steel 3-4 fork, billet keys , brass pads on all forks, and new 1st 2nd and third gears. it worked great for about a month , then i made a 6th to 3rd downshift on the highway and it made a loud bang , i backed out of the throttle and babied to the house, few simple checks tried to leave the yard and clakety clannk then bind u couldn't force the car to move unless u backed up, then a few more feet and repeat the same.it also whined loudly if the clutch was released thats why i pulled it out , the input shaft will move in and out but not side to side,i haven't pulled it apart yet cause i failed the first time, thats y i drove to houston to them they would accept it in a bucket and fixed it, and now this but i may try it again i read a post today that was pretty detailed but i was hoping to get an idea on what to order....

I've fixed so much of their crap, I have lost count. Most of it was a month or less old and they were units built right before the hauled ***.

Well, aside from the obvious fradulent company they were, sorry about that, really I am.

Wll, it does sound like NO BUENO. More than a simple broke key,so to speak. If you move teh input shaft in and out, that is a BAD sign, along with teh noise, and you can't move teh car..indicates that you have a broke "something" inside...input shaft itself, mainshaft, cluster, a gear set (or 2, or 3, etc...) Tine for a rebuild, and depending on HOW bad, it might be cheaper to find a used unit....I know that sucks. Best thing to do is, if tight on money....

get you a nice, clean, spacious work space. Lay out some towels and such.
Drain the tranny fluid. Then, pop her open, keeping ALL parts in order to assess the damage. THEN, you can determine if it is worth being rebuilt (if you take pics of teh stuff, we can help you identify what is broke, and how much it SHOULD cost), and THEN, you can either try and rebuild yourself, or have someone do it for you. My shop rebuilds T56's, and if you want to talk, give me a call/PM/Email, and I will be happy to help ya out. GL
Hope that helps some.

bumping a kind of dated thread.

I was just wondering if its normal that you can wiggle the input shaft side to side?
Mine doesnt go in and out just a little play side to side.

Some of their eariler units were fine, but like said funding a race car with money that is supposed to be put towards the cost of actually doing rebuilds..... I have heard of a few units locally going out early too.

That's normal and fine, as long as you can't move it in and out.
