Manual trans options?
I hate that I have to post this question, but I'm having a hard time trying to find legitimate info. I'm working on putting together a budget 5.3 s10. A t56 is going to be a third of the total cost. Are there any cheaper manual options?
The motor will be mild and truck light with street tires and minimal abusive shifting. I figured I'd get a straight answer here.

I never drove a truck with an nv4500 but I hear they don't shift nice. Is that out? Then there is the zf6? But that doesn't seem to be any cheaper than a t56.

The NV4500 is a heavy duty truck transmission and intended for that kind of use. The ZF 6 speed that was in the c4 Vette is a nice unit but might be a little difficult to retrofit into your application and the rebuild parts are extremely expensive.

New or used? You can also look at Tremec's TKO 5 speed's. Good tranny, and cheaper than a T56. I would not think twice about putting a "truck" tranny in your setup though (NV4500, 5600, etc..) I have teh NV5600 in my Cummins, and while it is a great tranny, the thing is HUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEEEEEEE and weighs a couple hundred pounds, not to mention height, it is a very TALL tranny, and probaly not even be able to fit it in your S10. (the 4500 is not much different in size) So I would stick with a "car" tranny....
