oh, and there is no electronics hooked up to it other than the speedometer, what does the skip shift solenoid do, and could this be something to do with the reverse, there is nothing hooked to this sensor.

With the reverse lockout solenoid not hooked up, it will be hard to push the shifter over to reverse, but it shouldn't pop it out of reverse once the gear is engaged.

I have a 2000 SS basically brand new and I have the same problem every once in a while. Its irritating when I have to jam it in. But it never pops out

Take off the console and lower shift boot and see if it still does it. It could just be something binding against the shifter stick. If it still does it, then it's internal.

seems to be a pretty common problem. if it is internal, than it's most likely a worn brass reverse blocker ring. I have the same problem and you can check out my thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/. I'm actually planning on replacing the reverse parts in my trans tomorrow. Hope that helps!

your shifter could possibly be the problem but its probably the brass ring inside the tranny. Which wouldn't take you long to fix after you dropped the tranny. You wont have to disassemble the whole thing unless you want to do a full rebuild on it.

PS mineola is by Tyler

Couldn't tell you why mine does that, but I put it in first then reverse and it always engages fine.
