Default Running through the gears without driveshaft

I changed the fluid in my T56 (was getting some grinding) and want to test it out. However, I ripped the rear axle out to clean it up and replace the end seals. Can I row through the gears without the driveshaft in place, or will this get transmission fluid all over?

fluid will be thrown out of the slip yoke area. Also, without a load on the output you won't get a good idea of the typical grinding.
