Today my brother bought a 2002 Z28 Camaro. We towed it all the way home and as he was driving he called and told me that ONLY SOMETIMES when he would put it in third gear it would pop out almost immediately. The person he bought it from did say it had a spec clutch, new master cylinder, and new flywheel. We were told that it around 3000 miles on all of those new parts. He did one WOT shift from 2nd-3rd and it went into gear no problem but just driving normal it pops out sometimes. I did not drive or ride in the car while it was doing this. I don't exactly know all about it but this was my understanding of what was happening anyone have any clues what it could be or how to fix it.

What kind of shifter does he have. I had this issue on a Hurst shifter with positive stops and all I had to do was adjust the stops a bit to give me just a hair more travel in to 3rd at the stick.

He has a hurst short throw out of a 02 SS. I do not know if it was the entire assembly or just the shifter itself (if that makes sense.) If it is the stops making this issue how do go about adjusting them. Also could that cause the car not to come out of gear when u push on the shifter. It did this today in a parking lot and he wasn't moving. He had to take both hands and push really hard to get it out of gear.

I'm not sure about the stock Hurst shifter, but there should be instructions on the web for the aftermarket one.

Sounds like its time for a rebuild. Mine did the same thing, would pop out of 3rd and then it would get stuck in 4th so bad i could hardly get it out. Hopefully its as simple as a shifter adjustment but i wasnt so lucky

I had the same issue, I had a broken key on the 3-4 synchro assy.

Its probably the transmission itself. 3rd gear issues are very common on a T56. Upgrade the fork, shift keys and new syncros usually resolves the issue.

Thanks for your advice guys. He has been driving it and the only thing that is going wrong is it will pop out of third sometimes but if he keeps his hand on the shifter it won't pop out. Sounds like the T56 will need a rebuild fairly soon and if it was to get new keys synchros and forks do you guys have an estimate what it would cost. Thanks again you all have been very helpful.
