Just go slow. Some of those rings are just brittle. I was able to take mine off my 96 without breaking it.

easier way is to take the two 7mm bolts out from inside the center console and slide that section out. unplugg the cig. lighter and it is out. If you break it there is a guy that makes a metal ring on here that is a great product. Had one in my old car.

^ I was going to metion the metal ring. When I bought my car it was already broken. I bought a new one at the stealership and then a couple days later saw the guy selling the metal rings for less than I paid. Oh well...

No worries. If they break, you can glue them back on as-good-as-new with ABS Cement: https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...l#post13098661

as mentioned just take the top half of the console off so you can see what your doing from the bottom too, but also why are you taking it off? if your changing out your shifter or something just pop off the shift **** and keep the boot clipped to the console

As mentioned, just take the top of the console off if you still have the plastic ring. Mine broke the first time I took it out, so it got replaced with the 'farmer' metal ring version. One of the best investments I made! That has been in & out a bunch of times now and never had an issue with it.

well actually.. the directions make ZERO sense.. they say to take the boot off but then they leave it on and still disassemble the whole console when they already had access to the shifter shaft..

lol whatever i guess i'll just figure it out

taking the top of the console off is also only 2 bolts and believe me, less time consuming than messing with that boot and risking breaking the clips...the whole install of just that new stick including taking the top of the console off will take under five minutes

unscrew the shift **** and two 7mms in the console, lift top of console off(unclipping the ash tray light and cig lighter), swap sticks, put back together in reverse order

i use a pocket knife and pry it out gently. but just removing the top console piece is best as you would totally avoid touching the boot ring

there are two bolts under the dash however, thats for the bottom half of the console which you dont need to remove if your just swapping sticks
