Faceplated T-56 2nd road test
Took it out tonight for the first time for a quick spin around the block. Initial thought "what the hell was I thinking" LOL. This was a very gingerly drive with upshifts at 2500-2800 under light throttle just due to the fact of not knowing what was going to happen. It sounds like a trans with bad syncros on the upshift slight to moderate clunk. The downshift was the scary part. No matter what I did it sounded like a grenade under the car. Tried fast/slow nothing changed the downshift. Double clutched it even tried to coast for a bit and grab a lower gear and nothing. Tried to blip the throttle and that made it very angry to say the least, very violent. I need more time to learn the rpm vs mph it wants to downshift at. I will post up as I put some miles on the car and learn as this is going to take a relearning how to drive a manual mentality.

I never had regrets, but it does take some time to get used to. I had most of the problems worked out after about 75 to 100 miles.
Like you said, you have to re-learn.
As I stated in your other thread, DO NOT downshift or even upshift more than one gear at a time or it will sound like all hell breaking loose below. Downshift 1 gear at a time, 4-3, 3-2, 2-1 if need be. I can nowgo 4-3 and 3-2 with virtualy no sound now, 2-1 still makes a bit of noise.
Up shifting has to be done quickly, no second guessing, and once again, one gear at a time. The faster you move the shifter, the smoother the shift will be.

Any way you can set up a camera and get some video during your learning process?? It might help some of the guys that are first driving theirs. So they know what it sounds like before it gets learned 100%. Not to mention interesting to watch haha.

I still haven't figured out downshifting. If I do it's from 5th to 4th at about 10 mph or so. Doesn't clunk too much then. With 4.56 gears I don't need to downshift much though. I just lug it in 4th or 5th. I do like 5th and 6th still having syncros. Sometimes I'll get some speed up and go from 2nd straight to 5th.

2nd road test tonight. 30 miles total on this trans. THis is what I have learned so far. On the upshift I normally cruise up to around 3k then clutch in pull to neutral at same time let up on clutch about 3/4 of the way and push clutch in and at same time throw in to next gear. Goes in extremely smooth and no hint there is anything different. Smoother than the syncro setup. Basically on normal driveing double clutch 1-4 and it is great. Normal 5th-6th shifting.
Now the downshifting. Still learning but after talking with Liberty yesterday about it he said no matter what do not play around or hesitate get it into the next gear. The worse thing is to take your time putting it in a lower gear.
In 5th gear I let the speedo come down to around 40 ish were it just starts to buck and carry on the tach reads 1800 I push clutch in and just blip to try to achieve around 2200 and slam the lower gear. Out of the maybe 20 times I tried maybe I got 25% with no clunk or grind or the sound of something getting ready to explode. The other 75% makes me not want to downshift at all. LOL. I am going to try the double clutch on the downshift with a little blip of the throttle and see how that does.
My overall opinion to you guys looking to do this is I would not do it to a daily driver. I am sure it would be fine but just get old, you have to be thinking 110% about what you are doing. Sure after a bunch of miles it will become 2nd nature but not for a while.
For you guys that are weekend toys that you take to the track and just cruise on the weekends I would do it without issue. Just know what you are getting yourself into. This is not for everyone. If you are the guy that does not like the big cam with the surge and the bucking you will NOT like this. But like someone else said I am driving something that most would never think of however I also have a spool, all heim joint suspension, no front sway bar, big solid roller cam and drag shocks at all 4 corners set to drag. And soon to have drag brakes on the front. So I consider myself on the more aggresive side.
Again, this is my opinion with only 30 miles driven. Most of the old school guys I talked to that ran this stuff years ago swear by it and say once you get the shifting down with were the motor/trans wants it is the greatest thing. I will keep you all posted as I continue to drive it more and learn new things. Just let me know if you have any questions and I will try to answer them. Thanks guys.

I took a vid this saturday morning, but my freakin' edditing software is not cooperating. the WMV encoder is expired or some **** and it only encodes the first 30 seconds. Im going to try and get the vid up there sometime this week. Ill make a seperate post.
