Default ANOTHER noob question... extension housing binding?

I have the trans almost pur completely back together, but when I tighten the bolts on the extension housing, the input shaft becomes much harder to spin. This is a T56 from a vette with F-Body extension housing. Is there a machining difference, or is something probably in wrong?

Does the housing go flush to the case without tightening it? I would check the cluster gear race area. That little plastic funnel likes to get out of place and mess with the shimming.

Nope. Its about 1/16-1/8 off, and I saw the plastic piece and thought the bearing would align it. Thanks for the info(again lol)

On the 2pc. countershaft models, the countershaft bearing race could potentially drop out a little bit. A bit of assembly lube will hold it in place.

You also have to make sure the reverse idler setup in the new tailhousing is within spec. When you start mixing parts, you have to watch out for the variations. Some idlers come with no spacers, some come with 1, others have 2.

Also, what was the shimming specs you found on the extension shaft during assembly? (or is that what you're trying to measure?)

I think I got it. The countershaft is out too far. When I put the housing on, there is about 1/16" of gap. From this, I gather that the gasket is a requirement, and the use of just silicone is not sufficient. Sound about right? And how do I make sure the reverse idler is shimmed right?

The countershaft? or the extensionshaft? Did you remove the shims from behind the original extensionshaft tapered bearing race, in the tailhousing?

There's no "gap" between case parts, the RTV is just there to fill in any imperfections and most get's squeezed out.

1) The vette housing had 2 shims.. so does the camaro I have.
2) I found some weird things in the trans after some disassembly for inspection
A) weird 6th gear bearing shape.

B) Weird washer shape. Came from b/w the counter and extension shafts.

I had one of the wide spacers in there too. Could this have been my whole problem?

That bearing is not suppose to look like that.

Are you using the complete C5 extension shaft with double-cone synchros?

What wide spacer do you have? There should be no large spacer on the C5 extension as the 6th gear has the takeup space built into it. There should only be one of those small-think spacers, between the 6th gear needle bearing and the synchro snap-ring.

Okay. Thats what I thought. Now that I think about it, thats probably why I was missing a wide spacer on the output shaft. I think I got it all figured out now... or I hope.
