Default So a T56 takes 4 quarts?

I have a T56 out of a 2000 camaro.
It's been in the garage draining for 2 weeks because I ordered the recommended 88861800 Manual Transmission Fluid from GM. (didn't know it would take this long to get it)

I'm just going to pump 4 quarts in it. Not going to go with the 'til it comes out of the fill hole' method.

Is this acceptable?

I'm asking because the mustang guys with T56's have something they call the 3.2 fill. And some use Mercon V. I'm guessing this is 3.2 quarts and it helps shifting somehow. I don't know.

I think it takes a little under 4 quarts. The "fill until it comes out" method is honestly your best bet. You DO NOT want to overfill.

Yup fill until it starts to come out, make sure the car is level though.

I'm actually taking out the parts store fluid and going with the newer (4 years ago) GM recommended fluid (which is not Dex III or Synchromesh).

It was only $3.03 per quart, can't go wrong, hopefully.

Part number 88861800, I put that in google and clicked shopping.

I read about it here. https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...iii-atf-2.html

And found the quote below here: http://www.sandyblogs.com/techlink/2...dexron-vi.html

TIP: Any vehicle that previously used DEXRON-III for a manual transmission or transfer case should now use p/n 88861800 (88861801 in Canada) Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid.

I agree with the other guys, dont just fill it with 4 qts. and call it good. It's impossible to get all the fluid out and if you overfill it, it's just going to come out the vent tube on top of the tranny and make a mess under your car while you are driving. Let us know how the tranny feels with the new fluid. This Dexron VI debate has been going on for a few years and everytime I find a thread that seems to be clear cut on why we should or shoudn't use this stuff in our T56 transmssions, I find more threads that make me change my mind. I've been using regular Dex III for years and have a 2000 model like you that supposedly has the paper lined blocker rings, which may or may not be damaged by using synthetic fluids, that's another debate by itself. I've seen threads that says Dex VI is synthetic. Is that true?

I put 4 quarts in with the car on it's side, set it down level and it just trickled out the fill hole.
I emptied the drain pan into the empty containers and almost exactly 4 quarts came out.

I took out Castrol Dex/Merc.

This fluid I put in smells bad, sounds like water in the bottle, shifts are a little notchy? it goes right in gear no problem but the feel is different. It works ok.

The Dex VI is full synthetic, been thinking of putting that in my truck (4L80E). Even the super tech dex vi says synthetic on the bottle.

I've always just dumped 4 in the shifter area and went on my merry way. Never had a single issue except when I tried syncromesh which was great for about 200 miles then it grind like **** every time. Put dex III back in and it was good to go again.

not to hijack, but I've been using the dex vi stuff for about 15K miles now, and it works great. I drained a little bit out to check the fluid, and it looks likes new. My shifts are really nice, or as nice as a T56 can be! I would recommend it, it feels better than the syncromesh that I ran for 50K miles.(changes every 15K miles)

I've been running Pennzoil Synchromesh for years with no issues. If you let the tranny drain completely, 4 quarts will be just right, it always has been for me.
